Lowther Castle, now just a shell
The present building was started in 1806 for Sir Hugh Cecil Lowther the 5th Earl of Lonsdale. He was called the Yellow Earl and was the founder of both the Lonsdale Boxing Belt and the AA (Automobile Association) hence all AA vehicles are yellow

The village of Lowther was originally next to the church but Sir John Lowther felt that it spoilt his view so in the 1680's he built "Newtown" to the east of the castle and demolished the old village
