Walk Information

Walk route: Stickle Barn, Great Langdale - Stickle Ghyll (Mill Gill) - Stickle Tarn - Jack's Rake - Pavey Ark - Harrison Stickle - Pike Howe - Stickle Barn, Great Langdale
Distance: 3.50 miles
Ascent: 2,200ft
Time: 2 hours 50 minutes
With: on own
Conditions: Sunny, scattered cloud
Comment:
Jack's Rake is a grade 1 scramble up across the face of Pavey Ark. A lot of the climb is in a groove so there is less feeling of exposure than say Striding Edge or Sharp Edge, having said that I found it technically harder than either of them.
I last climbed Jack's Rake 20 years ago, I was leaner and more agile back then!
This walk features in Mark Richard's new walking guide 'Great Mountain Days in the Lake District'

The path up to Stickle Tarn is busy today

If you have you Wainwright guide out the tree on the skyline is the 'third ash tree'

Looking back down the first section

Ascending to the 'third ash tree' approaching the worst section per AW, definitely the steepest continuous part of the rake

Looking down the lower part of the rake from next to the tree

The 'third' ash tree

Scramblers on the hardest part of the ascent, in my opinion, an awkward couple of moves just after passing Gwynne's Chimney

The groove up to Great Gully with 'The Gun' on the skyline

Looking back down on the easy terrace

A splinter of rock sometimes referred to as 'The Gun', another awkward move is needed to climb up past it

Great Gully is climbed for a short distance before traversing left and then ascending the rocky slabs to finish just to the right of the pinnacle
