Alfred Wainwright in Fellwanderer: 'These, then were the things - a love of the fells, a desire to escape from the common round, a longstanding interest in maps and an aquired interest in drawing, an insatiable urge to look round the next corner on a trodden way if I could find one and it didn't matter if I couldn't - that caused me in the evening of November 9th 1952 to pen my first page in what I intended to be a series of seven guidebooks to the Lakeland fells, each covering a defined area, and, if you are interested, the first page I did depicted the ascent of Dove Crag from Ambleside.'

Exactly 50 years on saw the Inaugural Meeting of the Wainwright Society at Ambleside Youth Hostel followed for many by an ascent of Dove Crag.
